Lean Back

Today was the first meeting of our “mission group”. The alternate name for the groups was “small groups without the pressure to be best friends where serving others on a weekly basis is part of what each group is expected to do,” but in the end we just thought mission groups would be easier to remember.

I met with three other guys and we went down to Open Door Ministries (http://www.odmdenver.org/ - a really sweet ministry) and met with the director there (David) to talk about how we could partner with them to do some construction/landscaping stuff on a house they’re finishing some remodeling on. As David showed us around, he pointed to various projects and we all assumed the “men looking at construction projects” pose. (Now I’m really not trying to be sexist here. I could have called it the “people looking at construction projects” pose, but for some reason I just haven’t seen many women standing around looking at things that need to be done.) For those of you not familiar with the “men looking at construction projects” pose, first you limp to the side like your legs was broken, shakin and twitchin (whoa, sorry, that something else, if you don’t get it don’t worry, it just means you weren’t exposed to cheesy early 90’s rap) it’s really when you lean heavily on one foot, fold your arms, and nod approvingly like you know exactly what needs to be done and how to do it. (This is usually accompanied by “hmm,” “oh,” and “mmm” at intervals of about 6 seconds.)

So anyway, it’s exciting because we’re really going to be able to play a significant part in getting the remodeling on this house finished up. This is the first time I’ve ever been a part of a group that has emphasized regular service to others as part of what it does, and I’m really excited about the impact it will make on all of us.
