Isaiah's One!
At 3:30pm today my son, Isaiah, will turn 1! We have had a wonderful year with him and it's hard to believe the first one is over. Look out adolescence! So in honor of his first birthday I thought I'd list my three favorite things about him and our first year together.
3. His affinity for poles. Seriously, he has all kinds of colorful flashy toys, but give him a windshiled wiper or a broom and he forgets all about the toys. And despite his compartive non-interest in anything non-pole-like, we continue to buy him toys.
2. His love of learning. Isaiah is the kind of kid who is constantly moving and gets ticked off if he's not around the action for one minute. From the time he learned to crawl he has been getting into everything he can reach. He is willing to try almost anything and wants to learn how everything works. It is truly a joy to watch him explore and learn about his world.
1. What he has taught me about my Father. In the book, "To Own a Dragon," by Donald Miller, he talks about how a parent child relationship is the only one where there is love from the moment the two meet, not based on anything, and completely unconditional. I am blessed to have the experience of loving my son in that way. Calling my God Father has taken on new meaning for me as I realize what it means to love someone just because they are your child, no matter what they do. I do not love Isaiah less when he continually gets into things he shouldn't or more when he just sits on my lap and lets me hug him. He is always my son and I always love him tremedously. And since God is my Father, my relationship with Isaiah has taught me that God must take great pleasure when I just stop and sit with him. I know what it's like to have a child who is always on the go, but when he stops and chooses to be with me, doing nothing, it is one of the greatest joys I know.
I am so thankful and proud to be Isaiah's dad. He is an amazing gift from God and I look forward to what he will teach me, how he will make me laugh, and how our relationship will grow during his second year.

Here's my top three:
3. The noise he makes when he really likes his food. Where did he learns to go "mmmmmmmm" when the food is good? I don't know, but I love it really bad.
2. When he gets so excited about something that he falls (when he is standing or walking). The best part is that usually the thing that makes him that excited is something as simple as somebody smiling at him or even looking at him.
3. I know this is super selfish, but when he sees me and smiles and acts really happy. I know it's mostly because he just sees me a lot, but it makes me feel like one of the greatest people in the world because he really likes me. It's funny that the love of a child that can't talk or do anything tangible for me is one of the greatest loves that I hope for. What a blessing.
So happy birthday I-man. You make the lives of all of us more joyful and meaningful. You're the greatest.
And now my top 3:
3. I love the way Isaiah "directs traffic". I especially love the noise he makes in combination with the hand pointing straight and determined. It's like I'm his own personal taxi to something new he will explore.
2. I love how big his lower lips gets when he's ready to pout or cry. I shouldn't think it's funny because it usually means he hasn't gotten his way or is mad, but it is sooooo cute, and I can't help myself.
1. Finally, I love how his smile, giggle, and happiness is contagious. He literally brings a light and joy to anyone who is around. It is so amazing how small children do this, and it seems extra special when he does it. I am geting a glipse of what it wil be like to love my own children from the start..because even though I'm just his aunt, I've loved him as long as he's been here.
Happy Birthday Buddy!
