My Recent Conversion

I have always been a big fan of technological advances—tapes, microwaves, computers—you name it, I like it. With one exception. From the inception of the cell phone feature known as text messaging (texting in slang) I have resisted employing my thumbs to punch out a message to a friend or loved one or just someone else. I just thought it was too impersonal and that it would take more time to type in all the letters than it would to just call a person. I mean, I can make a call while I pop the video tape in my fancy video tape rewinder (is that a sweet invention or what! Now I can rewind one movie while starting the next one, amazing!) but I can’t type a text message while I do it.

But yesterday I was converted. There was no Damascus road experience or anything, it’s just like my brain said to itself, “Pepe (my brain’s name), it’s time you join the 21st century. Like texting now.” And I said okay.

If I’m honest, one of the things I like about it is that I don’t have to talk to anyone. I like to talk to people, but I really don’t like talking on the phone. Texting allows me to get essential info to someone without the risk of actually having to talk to them. The other reason I like it is that I can check a text message in about ten seconds but it takes me a couple minutes to listen to a voice message.

I feel good today. It’s been a good conversion.

I hate text messaging. Did I say hate? Yes. There have been two times in my life where I understand. 1-To get info to people in the library because you aren't allowed to answer your phone. 2-At a concert IF and ONLY IF you are trying to find a friend at a show with multiple stages (like the warped tour) and you need to figure out where to meet them. Yesterday I went to see Mates of State open for Death Cab, and all these people were texting their friends DURING THE SHOW. NO RESPECT AT ALL. Who are these people and where did they learn about music? Probably from the radio where there is no respect and we refer to people like american idol winners or other pop singers as "artists" thereby completely robbing the term of any meaning at all. I hate this almost as much as I hate it when people use all caps online. HATE

I'm not a big fan of cell phones or text messaging either, mainly because people are so rude about it. But I was visiting friends this week whose daughter is in Germany and she sends a short text message each night to let them know how things are going at camp. Fast and a lot cheaper than an international call. So there's one good reason that I know of to use it.
